My girlfriend and I went to china town the other day and she bought two baby turtles.
After a little research we think that they are red eared sliders. They look exactly like red eared sliders except for the fact that they have yellowish spots for ears. Also they are under 4 inches, 1 1/2 inches if even. They are not eating and one of them has a soft shell with some discoloration. I know that this isn’t good from other sites I’ve been to.
So far, this is my set up: 20 gallon aquarium (filled up to about 3 inches), filter, heater, water pump (all intended for 20 gallon tank), and a 100W High Pressure Sodium lamp for artificial light. I’m not sure if this is at all adequate but I’ll bet it beats the tiny little plastic box with the palm tree that they came with. You can tell they were way stressed out, it’s like they were trying desperately to fight there way out. Now they just sit there, which I’m assuming is normal for turtles. The food is generic terrapin turtle food.
I’ve only had this set up for about a day but the turtle that looked sick seems to be getting a darker shell already. We’ve kept the light on all night, I’ve got more and more powerful lights if needed.
We’re heading out to the pet store today but some tips would be appreciated.
Also, is it ok to play with them? I have a friend who’s had turtles and it turns out they died becuase he was playing with them too much, he was a little kid at the time of course 
)
Got the calcium, the thermometer and special frozen shrimp. The lady at the pet store said that they were in fact red eared sliders…
